North Korea... "A clear and present danger."
By Steven E. Masone
On Wednesday,May 27th, 2009-- North Korea announced that it is no longer bound by the 1953 armistice that halted the Korean War. North Korea made these startling statements two days after it's latest nuclear tests that have caused serious concerns internationally and here in the U.S.
According to reports from the Washington Post, North Korea also warned that it will respond " with a powerful military strike" should it's ships be stopped by international forces trying to stop the export of missiles and weapons of mass destruction.
The twin declarations, delivered by the country's state news agency, followed South Korea's announcement Tuesday that it would join the navel effort that will stop and inspect suspicious ships at sea. North Korea stated that such participation would be a "declaration of war."
For whatever reasons that North Korea feels it necessary to provoke and push the world towards nuclear war might not be apparent to those who do not understand the geo-politics of Sino-Russian- U.S. relations. North Korea is no longer just sabre rattling to get concessions and extort international aid from the world community.
Now it has been allowed to arm it's self with nuclear weapons without impunity, it must create a "state of war" with the south and commit non-nuclear military action in order to re-negotiate a truce in which they can keep their nukes. Of course this will be unacceptable to the U.S., South Korea and Japan, but Russia and China must completely ally themselves with our coalition opposed to North Korea becoming a nuclear threat more so than it has already been allowed to escalate to.
Expect an incursion into the South soon and the U.S. will have to respond setting off international repercussions that will de-stabilize the world 's already fragile economy, and this is exactly what North Korea has planned to do. A quick and immediate truce will be pushed in order that economic recovery can get back on track.
Prolonged uncertainty could devastate the world economic situation and North Korea will not care how many lives will be lost with their gamble. The odds that harsh and swift retribution against them by the U.S. is not a viable solution at this time, because we do not have the money to
rebuild a destroyed North Korea.
The question now is, will President Obama "blink" and let them win a first strike surprise attack, or will he move in a pre-emptive strike to minimize U.S. and South Korean Losses and take away any advantage in their game plan? Let's hope he does the right thing and disarms them even if he must unilaterally.
