The San Francisco Giants opened up the scoring in Game 1 of the 2012 World Series when Pablo Sandoval hit a 421-foot bomb to deep center field off Detroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander in the bottom of the first inning.

Sandoval's blast was the only hit allowed in the frame, and came with two outs. Verlander would immediately strike outBuster Posey looking and avoid any further damage. He retired the next four hitters in the game through the second inning, and the score remained 1-0.

Barry Zito pitched a solid two innings for the Giants, striking out one and walking another while allowing just one hit after facing eight batters. Detroit's lone hit came on second baseman Omar Infante's one-out single to right field off Zito.

The Giants are looking to capture their second World Series title in three years, last winning baseball's ultimate prize in 2010 with a 4-1 series victory over the Texas Rangers.
